🌱 Strategy to Scale > To Niche or Not to Niche?

To Niche or not to niche.

As a content creator, understanding the power of niche marketing can significantly impact your personal brand and business growth.

For me, I see myself as a dynamic human being, so having many “niches” to represent the whole of who I am, makes sense for me. Because of this, my personal brand easily spans 5+ niches in total and gives me the flexibility to reach a wider audience.

Niching down involves targeting a specific audience segment with unique needs, preferences, and identities that align with your passion.

Today, we will explore the benefits of niching and not niching and how it can shape your personal brand, enhance your reach, and influence your growth trajectory.

This will include examples of content creators who have embraced or deviated from niche marketing strategies, showcasing the potential outcomes of each approach.

Why You May Want to Niche

Did you know that content creators who specialize in a niche earn 2.5 times more than those who don't?

Niche marketing allows content creators to position themselves as experts and thought leaders within a specific industry or subject matter. By focusing on a particular niche, creators can establish a distinct identity and develop a deep understanding of their target audience's needs.

This targeted approach helps to build credibility, trust, and authority within the niche, ultimately enhancing the content creator's personal brand.

Example: Emily Skye is a content creator and mother, who has carved a niche by focusing on inspiration for mothers who struggle to get back into shape post-pregnancy.

By specializing in this niche, Emily has built a loyal following of women seeking quick and effective workout routines, establishing herself as a go-to in both pre and post-partom fitness space.

Benefits of Niching

Targeted Audience: Niche marketing enables content creators to cater to a specific audience with tailored content that addresses their unique pain points. This fosters deeper connections and engagement, leading to a dedicated community of loyal followers.

Expert Positioning: By specializing in a niche, content creators can develop expertise and authority in their chosen field. This expertise enhances their personal brand's reputation and increases their perceived value within the niche industry.

Reduced Competition: Focusing on a niche often means operating in a less crowded market space. With fewer competitors, content creators have a higher chance of standing out and capturing the attention of their target audience.

Challenges of Niching

Limited Market Size: Niching down may result in a smaller market size compared to a broader approach. This could potentially limit the number of potential subscribers or clients available to content creators.

Reduced Flexibility: Focusing on a specific niche may restrict content creators' ability to explore other topics or experiment with different types of content. This could limit their creative freedom and variety of content offerings.

Market Volatility: Niching down too narrowly could make content creators more vulnerable to market changes and fluctuations within their niche. If the niche experiences a downturn, it may impact the creator's success.

Now, let’s take a look at considerations for not niching.

Why You May Not Want to Niche

Broad Appeal: Some content creators may choose not to niche to cater to a wider audience or explore diverse topics. This approach allows for more flexibility and creativity in content creation, appealing to broader interests.

Versatility: Not niching allows content creators to experiment with various content formats, styles, and subject matters. This versatility can benefit those seeking to diversify their portfolio and explore different creative avenues.

Example: Colleen Roden is a free-spirited wanderlust traveler passionate about travel, beauty, lifestyle, and wellness, and intentionally avoids niching down further to showcase her versatility and attract a broader audience interested in creative pursuits. From travel hacks, to must-have beauty products a healthy immune system on the go, Colleen’s reach spans many industries and categories.

Benefits of Not Niching

More Flexibility: Without a specific niche, content creators have the freedom to cover various topics and experiment with different styles of content. This flexibility can lead to creative exploration and diversification of their offerings.

Adaptability to Market Shifts: By not narrowing their focus, content creators can adapt more easily to market shifts and changes in trends. They can pivot and explore new opportunities without being tied to a specific niche

Challenges of Not Niching

Lack of Specialization: Content creators who don't niche may struggle to establish themselves as experts in any particular area. This can make it challenging to differentiate themselves from competitors and gain.

Audience Fragmentation: Without a specific niche, content creators may struggle to build a loyal and engaged audience. The lack of a clearly defined target audience can result in diluted messaging and difficulty in resonating with a specific group of followers.

Brand Dilution: Not niching can lead to a diluted personal brand, making it harder for content creators to establish a distinct identity or expertise. This may hinder their ability to differentiate themselves from competitors in the saturated content creation landscape.

Grasping the importance of niche marketing for your creative business and personal brand is key for content creators.

At the end of the day, whether to focus on a niche or not boils down to what you're aiming for, what drives your enthusiasm, and the unique demands of your audience.

✨ CEO Mindset >The 'Fake It Till You Make It' Dilemma

According to Rhianna, sometimes you have to fake it 'til you make it.

But what does that mean exactly?

Listen, we've all had those moments where we pretended to know what we were doing or what someone meant. Whether it was confidently nodding along during a meeting or secretly googling industry jargon, we've all embraced a little "faking it."

What if I told you that there's a better way to navigate the world without sacrificing your authenticity?

The Culture of Fakery: In today's hyper-competitive landscape, the pressure to appear successful, knowledgeable, and influential is intense. Social media exacerbates this culture, showcasing carefully curated highlight reels of success stories. As a result, many individuals feel compelled to present an exaggerated version of themselves, hoping to attract opportunities and admiration.

And that’s where the danger starts.

The Danger of Deception: While a little confidence boost can be beneficial, relying on a façade of expertise can lead to detrimental consequences. Here's why the "Fake It Till You Make It" mentality can be dangerous:

Lack of Authenticity: Building genuine connections and relationships becomes challenging when authenticity takes a backseat. People crave sincerity and transparency and pretending to be someone you're not hinders meaningful connections.

Impostor Syndrome: Constantly pretending to be more capable than you believe yourself to be can breed feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt. The fear of being exposed as a fraud can lead to impostor syndrome, hindering personal growth and professional development.

Ethical Concerns: Creating a false persona or exaggerating qualifications can lead to ethical dilemmas. It's important to uphold integrity and ethical standards in all professional endeavors.

What if we embraced authenticity instead?

Now that we've explored the downsides of "faking it," let's shift gears and focus on how to cultivate an authentic CEO mindset.

Here are three steps to help you embrace your true self:

  1. Self-Awareness: Start by understanding your strengths, weaknesses, and areas for growth. Embrace your unique qualities and leverage them to your advantage. Authenticity begins with self-acceptance.

  2. Continuous Learning: Instead of pretending to know it all, embrace a growth mindset. Seek out opportunities for learning, skill development, and professional growth. The more you genuinely expand your knowledge, the more confident you'll become.

  3. Collaboration and Support: Surround yourself with a network of trusted colleagues, mentors, and advisors who value authenticity. Seek out genuine connections and engage in open and honest conversations. Together, you can navigate challenges and achieve success without the need for pretense.

Closing Thoughts: In a world where "faking it" has become the norm, it's essential to break free from the culture of facades. Authenticity is the cornerstone of lasting success and personal fulfillment.

So, let's challenge the status quo, embrace our true selves, and cultivate a CEO mindset that celebrates authenticity.

Remember, being genuine is always better than pretending to be someone you're not.

Now, go forth, be true to yourself, and let your genuine light shine!

🤩 Creative Genius > How To Find and Own Your Niche - A Conversation with Jaida Giddings

If you’re a content creator and are fairly active on Twitter, and TikTok you might have encountered Jaida Giddings.

Who is Jaida Giddings?

Jaida is a business owner turned UGC creator with a marketing and social media background.

After launching a jewelry business and showing up on TikTok, she realized she was passionate about creating content.

She works in various niches with a sharp focus on technology and wellness.

When she's not creating content, she enjoys getting outdoors in nature and watching YouTube.

Now, let’s jump into the conversation. 👇️

______

We caught up with Jaida to learn more about her approach to niching and how it’s impacted her business.

Shannon Marie: How do you determine which niche is the right fit for you as a content creator? What factors do you consider?

Jaida: When I started creating content, I wasn’t sure what niche I wanted to be in. I enjoyed creating content for all brands and didn’t really have any specifics. Later, I found that I really enjoyed tech asit easier to relay messages to my audience. I also noticed that these videos performed better than fashion or beauty content.

I would consider figuring out what you enjoy the most and using those passions as your niches!

Shannon Marie: Great advice! How do you respond to the argument that niching limits creativity and restricts content creators from exploring their full potential?

Jaida: If creators truly enjoy creating content for a specific niche, they should continue doing it. If a creator feels it’s hard to choose which niche to be in, then be in all!

That’s how I discovered that I didn’t need to stick to just one niche and feel tied down to something I might change my mind about later.

Not having multiple niches has allowed me to work with clients across several products or services.

Shannon Marie: Can you share any tips or strategies for identifying and targeting a specific niche audience that aligns with your content?

Jaida: I suggest researching popular topics within your target niche, including hashtags and captions, to grab the audience's attention.

See what other creators are posting in that niche and recreate it in your own way using SEO-specific keywords.

Shannon Marie: What advice would you give to content creators who are hesitant about niching down for fear of limiting their creative freedom or opportunities?

Jaida: My advice would be to do what feels right!

I first started out in the beauty space. And quickly learned I didn’t really love making that kind of content.

At the same time, I was getting projects in the technology and wellness space and learned that I absolutely love making this type of content. The more content I created in these niches, the easier/enjoyable it became!

I don’t believe a creator needs to feel restricted to one niche and can absolutely venture into additional niches to see what works best for them.

Shannon Marie: Have you ever considered expanding or shifting your niche? If so, what factors influenced your decision?

Jaida: Most definitely!

When I first started creating content, I worked with multiple random brands. I didn’t have any specific niche at the time. I do believe factors played a role in figuring out what I enjoyed the most. Some of these factors were working with similar niche brands and seeing great results. As well as being able to create UGC without even showing my face.

That’s what I love about technology UGC!
